Our new down under -- way down under -- expedition is a rugged bushwalk in Tasmania, where there’s no land to the south until you reach Antarctica. The South Coast Track, winding along the Southern Ocean through an unpopulated terrain of sandy shore and rocky mountain, is traveled by only a thousand adventurers a year! But trekkers who make this wilderness journey will be rewarded with a passage through an unspoiled and beautiful territory, where melaleuca and eucalyptus scent the air, and bladderwort and tea tree flower along the path. Exotic and unusual animals live here - animals such as the rare orange bellied parrot, the tree-dwelling ringtail possum, and the earthy echidna.
This adventure starts in Hobart, Tasmania’s capital city. We meet for an important briefing and gear check. Then there is time to do some sightseeing before you turn in to your comfortable bed. The next morning, early, we board our seaplane and fly to the airstrip at Melaleuca, where the permanent population is two. After a look around at the sights, we shoulder our packs and head off along the 53 mile track. Since there are no huts along the way, we’ll be carrying our own supplies and sleeping gear. That evening, after our trek along the beach, we’ll settle into our waterfront campsite and savor our first day in the bush.
Camping in the wilderness, far from crowds and vehicles, beach walking, hiking, swimming, exploring, enjoying magnificent views and delicious meals, this will fill our upcoming days on the trail. We’ll swim in beautiful Louisa Bay, climb through the Ironbound Range, and explore Little Deadman’s Bay and the beaches beyond. Our adventure ends at Cockle Creek and, if the group insists, we’ll make a watering stop at Dover’s Pub for a well-deserved toast. This is a challenging trek, with from 2 to 10 hours of hiking each day, great for the adventurous and hardy hiker who wants to escape the crowds and go for an exhilarating exploration in a wild and distant land.
For those who haven’t had enough fresh air, or can’t resist a chance to kayak, you might choose to join our kayaking extension on Bruny Island, a three day circumnavigation of this island in South Bruny National Park.
