Scotland: The Inner Hebrides

Loch Hopping by Kayak

Trip Overview
  • Intermediate Kayaking, Easy Day Hikes
  • 6 Nights Hotels/Bed & Breakfasts
Our friends in Glasgow let us in on a great paddling secret in the North Atlantic waters off Scotland. We followed their call and put together a distinctive adventure of discovery along this storied coast. This sea-kayaking odyssey through the Sound of Arisaig is the ideal way to experience the mystical beauty of Scotland’s West Coast and Inner Hebrides.

On a series of day paddles we encounter the wild coastal landscape, replete with marine wildlife and colonies of sea birds. We may see playful seals and otters off our bow, while ashore there are deer aplenty, rare pine marten, and birds of prey circling in the skies overhead.

The vistas are enchanting: white sandy beaches, clear teal bays that appear almost tropical, set against the backdrop of the dramatically sculpted small Isles of Rum & Eigg. These relatively sheltered waters are perfect for sea kayaking, offering a chance to develop your skills under the close eye of our expert guides. The accommodations and meals are as much a highlight of this trip as the scenery, as are the opportunities we have to meet some of the famously friendly local people.

Each day holds a new adventure, beginning with our arrival in Glasgow and transfer to Arisaig, a small village in Scotland’s West Highlands. Arisaig today is the center of a marine sanctuary, the gateway to the Road to the Isles, and claims to be the birthplace of the real-life Long John Silver. The village is also famous for its appearance in the popular Scottish movie Local Hero.

Most days we will spend six to eight hours exploring, paddling the crystalline waters of the Sound of Arisaig and hiking on the secluded islands. We’ll make a special visit to the tiny private island of Eilean Shona, home to rare and magnificent trees, abundant wildlife and a ruined castle – but no cars, shops or television. Evenings will be spent comfortably ensconced in small, cozy hotels or traditional Scottish inns, where we relax by the fire with a thirst-quenching pint of ale.
