*2009 EC Photo Contest Winners Announced!*

Dear Adventure Photographers!

It is with great pleasure that I announce the 3 top winners of this year's Explorers' Corner photo competition (click here to see our gallery of finalists). We sincerely thank all of our entrants for many great contributions. This year we had a lot of fun sorting through more than 500 images. We decided to choose photos that showcase the magical adventure moments that are a part of all EC trips. The winners are:

1st Place - Spitzbergen Kayaker

The winning image by Joey Campbell puts you in that seat of the kayak watching a wild polar bear close up in the high Arctic. It is more than a picture of a great creature. It is a depiction of you -  the adventurer in the wonder of nature! And of course, it is a well composed and correctly lit image as well.The other two images speak for themselves as well:

We hope that you have been inspired by the many images and will go out and take more pictures wherever your go exploring - and then take part in the 2010 contest in December. And stay tuned: we'll be announcing our top 5 honorable mention winners later this week!

January 15, 2010 - Submissions are now closed! Olaf and the Explorers' Corner team have selected the top 5 finalist images -- visit our gallery to see them. We will also be choosing 25 honorable mention photos in the next week, so check back to see if yours made the cut. Honorable mention photos will be entered in a random drawing to win one of five Explorers' Corner t-shirts!

This year's prizes:

  • Grand Prize: Free Explorers' Corner trip to the Galapagos Islands
  • Second Prize: Canon Powershot S5IS digital camera
  • Third Prize: Full color World Atlas

Here are the rules:

  • .jpeg, .gif, or .png formats only
  • Maximum file size: 3 MB
  • You can submit UP TO 3 images (any additional photos will NOT be considered)
  • Include your name and the location of the image
  • Submissions will be accepted Dec. 15, 2009, through Jan. 15, 2010

Check back daily to see if your photos made honorable mention (honorable mention photos are eligible to win one of five Explorers' Corner t-shirts). Remember, we’ll be taking submissions through January 15, 2010! The winners will be contacted via email and on the photo contest home page.
