Explorers’ Corner has operated successful sea kayaking and hiking trips in Eastern Greenland for several years and has made friends with the local hunters in the Ammassallik Island area. Here live a few small Inuit communities peacefully sustaining their lives in uncompromising, stunning winter landscapes. It is an area that is perfect for dog sledding, where majestic high mountains tower over long, deep, frozen fjords. There is no other place like this on Earth.
Our dog sled expedition starts in Tassilaq, after a helicopter flight from the local airstrip at Kulusuk. Our first evening we have dinner with our Greenland dog mushers to discuss our next sledding options and upcoming adventures. After sorting our gear and preparing the dogs, we harness our four-legged friends and mush through the lower valleys of Ammassallik Island to the little hunting hamlet of Tiniteqilaq (or the old Eskimo ruins of Akernernak, depending on the ice situation in the Sermiliq Fjord).
At the ice’s edge we board a small fishing boat that will ferry our dog teams two hours across the open Polynia and into the Johann Petersen Fjord, which has some of the most spectacular winter landscapes in all of Greenland - a confluence of five huge glaciers converges down through narrow, steep mountain valleys. The next days of dog sledding follow the frozen inner fjord systems of Johan Petersen Fjord to the north coast of Stoklundfjord, ending up on the western shoreline of Sermiliq Fjord. We then proceed with caution across the mighty Sermiliq and end up at the small settlement of Tiniteqilaq where we are invited to stay with the hospitable hunting families and our dogs get a well deserved rest! The final leg of our journey takes us south and southeast via Qodlortoq Lake on Ammassallik Island back to Tassilaq - where we celebrate our journey with a hot shower and a dinner feast. It will be a little sad to say goodbye to our dogs, on whom we have depended for our traveling.
The total sledding and skiing distance will be about 60-80 miles, depending on the weather and snow conditions. This is a physically challenging outdoor activity, where an expeditionary spirit and a flexible attitude are musts. However, this beautiful, pristine and remote place with its wonderful people will enrich your soul forever! Simply, an outdoor journey of a lifetime.
