Explorers' Corner staff visited the Croatian Adriatic Coast and they immediately fell in love with the place! The incredible people that greeted them when they paddled into a port, the octopus salad and the hearty wine, and the myriads of small limestone islands floating on a turquoise mirror are never to be forgotten. We have now decided to make this place a destination in the successful mixture of Explorers’ Corner “Classics”. We have finally found the right boat for a small group of no more than eight people – family owned and perfect to launch sea kayaks from. We’re inviting you to take part in our adventures in this magical place.
Our friends in Croatia have a 60-foot traditional wooden boat, beloved by the owners, and perfect for us. The boat is the Vila Vrgade, a name taken from a legend told throughout generations on the ship’s home island of Vrgada. According to the legend, there was a good fairy living under a cliff, in the hills above the village, looking out onto the Kornati islands. It was said that this fairy watched over the villagers and protected them from pirates and bad weather. What better auspices for our own adventures?
The Dalmatian Coast is a region on the eastern Adriatic; dotted with thousands of wonderful islands, palm trees and beautiful scenery. It is a place the Venetians once conquered and built up, and much of their architectural remains are touched by the Croatian influences of this century.
Our daily itinerary on this trip is very much dependent on weather and wind because we want to optimize our paddling conditions at the different islands we visit. The daily activities will include paddling in the mornings to avoid the afternoon winds and exploring the islands and their quaint towns by foot or bicycle in the early afternoons. In the late afternoons we will set sail or motor to the next island. This is an active journey with a small group of people under the Adriatic sun sailing around a beautiful coast steeped in history, food and culture.
Trust us—you are in for a treat!
